In many shamanic societies, if you came to a medicine person complaining of being disheartened, dispirited, or depressed, they would ask one of four questions. When did you stop dancing? When did you stop singing? When did you stop being enchanted by stories? When did you stop finding comfort in the sweet territory of silence?

[TW: rape culture] When asked by prosecutors why he didn’t stop the incident, he said, ‘It wasn’t violent. I didn’t know exactly what rape was. I thought it was forcing yourself on someone.’
from CNN.com, testimony by Evan Westlake, 18, a Steubenville football and baseball player
I didn’t know exactly what rape was… A fundamental issue of rape culture.

HOW THE FUCK IS HAVING SEX WITH A PASSED OUT INTOXICATED PERSON NOT FORCING YOURSELF ON THEM.

This is the ESSENTIAL problem. We expect our girls and women to know what rape is, and we’re okay with our boys and men not having a fucking clue. Not that I buy the bullshit that boys and men don’t know what rape is. I think we know and just don’t believe it applies to us.(via sonofbaldwin)

The fact that some of the witness to this can say that they didn’t think anything was wrong with what happen is a crime in itself. Parents, grown ups what are we displaying in our homes, and at work that teaches children that this is acceptable? The perpetual lack of regard for women as being equal respectable human beings is overwhelming.
It is sad because , this spotlights how ignorant our young people are; to think that if it is non violent -and no is not said it’s not rape
To think that exploiting someone who is helpless and then sharing this disgracing act over social media is ok
This exposes how glorified males , specifically male athletes are. They can be so far removed from reality that they lack compassion for others and objectify everyone.
It is sad because this type of behavior is so common and acceptable that the victimizers actually percieve there actions as not doing anything wrong, not a crime.
This verdict - these young men are now sex offenders for life and their promising football and high school careers are shot.
This young lady who is a victim ,hopeful can heal and grow from this.
Alcohol, drugs and deviant behavior is too common amongst teens, We have to Educate our children don’t just take their cell phones and lock them in the room . Educate our male children and female children the same . Educate for prevention. This is tragic for all parties involved. Simple dumb mistakes.
